Chris Byars is a steady contributor to the New York City jazz scene as a performer and educator since the early 1990s. He has released sixteen (16) CDs under his name. An award-winning bandleader and composer, Byars has led his group to perform concerts, commissions, recordings, and educational programs all over the world. Byars teaches jazz improvisation as learned from his mentor, the late Dr. Barry Harris.

In May 2021, she graduated from Oberlin College & Conservatory with degrees in Psychology (BA) and Piano Performance (BM) from Oberlin College & Conservatory. During the 2021-22 season, she will be working as a Teaching Fellow for the AmeriCorps ArtistYear program in Queens, NYC. She hopes to pursue advanced degrees in Education and Public Policy, as they impact childhood development and musical training.

Her teaching philosophy aims to develop the imaginative mind, sensitive ears, and technical facility so that students become self-directed learners with a fierce love of music.

Alfonso has participated in renowned music festivals, including Chautauqua, Aspen, and Zeister Muziekdagen in the Netherlands. A passionate educator, he is the co-founder of the International Chamber Music Festival of Guatemala and has served as visiting faculty at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala.
